Description
Ephemeral ponds may appear to be an unimportant bit of wetland in the Florida wilderness. However, they are critical to wildlife and the aquifer, the underground caverns where drinking water is stored. During the early twentieth century, these little ponds were drained...much to the detriment of the aquifer. Often they were replaced by deeper ponds. However, these deeper ponds and canals. However, these ponds and canals have been found to be less effective for supporting wildlife and the collection of drinking water. Thus Withlacoochee State Forest, north of Tampa maintains or re establishes this small critical wetlands.
