Description
This little owl resides nearby at the Moccasin Lake Raptor Sanctuary in Clearwater, Florida. Though usually nocturnal we caught him devouring his morning meal. He was nice enough to wave and wink at us. The sanctuary volunteers provide community education and day-to-day care for the birds who live at Moccasin Lake Raptor Sanctuary. They provide permanent care for thirteen species of raptors at Moccasin Lake Nature Park in Clearwater, FL. and sanctuary to over 26 birds of prey, including bald eagles and peregrine falcons. Many are injured, but some are rehabilitated. It is run by the Clearwater Audubon Society volunteers. The park is part of Clearwater Recreation and Parks. This little owl, ghostly and pale is normally strictly nocturnal. Barn Owls are silent predators of the night world. Lanky, with a whitish face, chest, and belly, and buffy upperparts, this owl roosts in hidden, quiet places during the day. By night, they hunt on buoyant wingbeats in open fields and meadows. You can find them by listening for their eerie, raspy calls, quite unlike the hoots of other owls. Despite a worldwide distribution, Barn Owls are declining in parts of their range due to habitat loss. They nest in Woodlands, groves, farms, barns, towns, cliffs. Typically in open or semi-open country in lowlands. May nest in forest or city if nearby area has good open foraging territory, such as farmland, marsh, prairie, desert. Any profits from this photo will be donated to the Audubon Society
